Consider a Sectional Door for the Shed, Barn, or Small Garage

Are you planning to build a small building, such as a shed, or even a small garage on your property? If you are, then you might be wondering what type of door would work best. You may be considering a sectional door, but you are wondering whether it is worth it. Let’s look at some of the best reasons to consider a sectional door.

Shed door

Before You Begin

Before you add one of these doors to your building, you need to make sure that you consider the minimum size to ensure you can lift the door to the roof. The minimum size is generally going to be at least 8’ wide and 14’ deep, along with at least 5” of headroom over the door and 2” additional space if you want to have an electric door opener. The building should have at least 112 square-ft. of floor space.

Benefits of Having a Sectional Door

Those who live in an area that has snow understand the pain and frustration of having to shovel the area in front of the building every time it snows, and they need to get into the wood or steel doors that open outward on the building. With a sectional garage door that goes up rather than out, you will not have to remove as much of the snow.

If the two 36” x 78” wood or steel doors open inward rather than outward, they are going to be taking up a lot of the internal space of the garage or shed. Having the two doors is also going to limit the amount of space you have to get things into and out of the garage, as well. You will not have this type of trouble if you are using a sectional garage door.

One of the other nice benefits of a sectional door is the fact that you can install an electric garage door opener, which you can’t do if you have two doors that open inward or outward. This can make getting into and out of the garage even easier.

What Is Available for Sectional Doors?

Now that you have a better idea of just why so many people like the idea of having a sectional garage door on their smaller buildings, you will want to learn more about the options available. For the door dimensions, you will need to have a minimum width of 4’, but it can be as wide as you like to the nearest inch. The most common height for the doors tends to be 6’6” to 7’.

When it comes to the designs available, you will find that the products are varied. Some have rectangular designs and decorative inlays, some are flush with the building, and others might have arched carriage doors. You can find a range of styles and colors, and is should be possible to coordinate the colors and design with your main garage door to help tie the property together.

You can also choose to add windows and other types of decorative hardware elements to help give the door a bit of personality. If you would like, you can visit the showroom, or you can head to the Design Centre to find a style you like or check out the image gallery.
