Tile? Paint? Epoxy? If you aren’t sure what kind of new floor you want, check out our garage flooring ideas and find what works for you!

The next time you’re in your garage, take a look at the floor. Is it dirty and dingy? Tired-looking, and old? Or even worse, maybe there are cracks and other visible signs of damage. It may look nothing like it did when you moved into your home.

It might not seem like a major thing, but the reality is that attractive and durable garage flooring can add significant value to your home. What is more, it creates an inviting environment that you’ll enjoy, no matter for what purpose the space is used.

Let’s take a look at some things to look for and minor tasks to complete before considering changing the flooring in your garage. Then, we’ll discuss some pros and cons of different types of flooring options.

What to Do Before Adding or Changing Garage Flooring

Before you start the process of researching new flooring types, you have to prepare your floors for the upgrade. While this process can be time-consuming, and even though you may be impatient to start the new floors, it is important. Otherwise, old damage may come back to haunt you later on.

You need to conduct a thorough inspection of your current floor. First, look for cracks or small holes where the concrete has been damaged.

Next, inspect for other signs of long-term damage, especially weather damage. These include mold and mildew growth, especially in the corners and along the walls, water pooling in the center, and damaged weatherstripping. The door’s threshold may also need replacing.

If this inspection yields significant findings, you may want to hire a contractor to come out and take a look. There is no point in changing the floors if the source of the problem is unresolved.

If there aren’t major issues, you can continue preparing the floor for the remodel. Be sure to address any stains from oil or other substances, as those can show through paint and epoxy especially.

When these repairs are made, you’re ready to choose your new floor covering. Let’s look at three of the simplest and most popular: epoxy, paint, and tile.

Option 1: Epoxy

Epoxy is a polymer that is extremely durable, making it ideal for use on a garage floor. It is applied in much the same way as a coat of paint, using brushes and rollers. However, when it dries, it hardens through a series of chemical reactions.

It is a little bit harder to use than paint, as it does not come pre-mixed. You will need to thoroughly combine the resin and hardener before application, so be prepared to do so. Once mixed, the epoxy needs to be applied immediately.

Don’t be confused by “epoxy paint,” which is traditional paint with just a little bit of epoxy in it to make it more durable.

Finally, epoxy can be purchased in a veritable rainbow of colors and shades (there is even glow in the dark epoxy!), so it is endlessly customizable to your home.

Option 2: A New Coat of Paint For Your Garage Floor?

Paint is another great option for garage floors, and it can very often cover stains and other signs of wear and tear. If you have oil spots from an old car, rust stains, stains from water damage, or anything else, paint can likely cover it. What is more, you can frequently touch up paint jobs to keep the floor of your garage looking fresh and new.

Be sure to purchase paint that adheres well to concrete, usually oil-based or latex. You should look for paint that creates a non-slip surface and that is resistant to materials likely to occur on your garage floors, such as oil, dirt and mud, moisture, and salt (especially if you live in a snowy climate). As we mentioned above, epoxy paint is a great option since it is even more durable.

We strongly recommend that you buy an extra (or two!) can of your garage paint to keep on hand. That way, covering future stains and damage will be a cinch!

Option 3: Tile Garage Flooring

While certainly the most expensive option on this list, tile is still incredibly customizable and a great way to upgrade your garage. Several types of tile are usable in your garage:

  • Plastic: usually made from PVC or polypropylene. These types of garage flooring typically come with accessories to smooth around the walls and the door.
  • Rubber: very comfortable and durable, rubber that is used in garages is similar to that which you see in gyms and play spaces. We highly recommend rubber if you use your garage as a workspace or spend a lot of time in there.
  • Wood composite: by far the most attractive option discussed in this article, wood composite snaps together easily and provides a sophisticated, finished look. They have a tongue and groove design that makes them easy to install and come with a transition strip for the area between the floor and the garage door.

All of these options are strong enough to support a great deal of weight from standard vehicles, trucks, and SUVs, and are durable enough for the wear and tear of a garage. Just be sure that they are designed for garage use before purchasing and installing.

Quick Fix: Floor Mats!

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a garage floor covering that is quick, easy, or temporary, you might want to consider floor mats. These roll-out surfaces come in both rubber and plastic. They can quickly cover stains or damage, or provide a comfortable surface on which to work. Best of all, they’re simple to clean or replace.

Sometimes, floor mats can also take more abuse than other options, including tile or epoxy. If you use your garage as an industrial space, floor mats might be your best option.

How About a New Garage Door, Too?

If you’re considering a garage update, a new door can seriously add to the appeal of the space, not to mention the value of your home. Maybe you want to add a new smart garage door opener for added security and convenience.

Or you may need to install windows to make the space more conducive to working. Windows protect you and your garage from the elements (and the public!) but let in natural light, which can make working or playing more enjoyable. Whatever your reason, choosing an all-new garage door to go with the new flooring is a good decision.
